Oxford is older than the Aztec Empire

There is evidence of teaching at Oxford as early as 1096. Tenochtitlan, capital of the Aztec Empire, was founded around 1325.

In other words: while the Mexica were raising their city over Lake Texcoco, students in England had already been complaining about exams for more than two hundred years.

These collisions are more common than they seem. Woolly mammoths still walked Wrangel Island when the pyramids of Giza already existed. And Cleopatra lived closer in time to the Moon landing than to the construction of those very pyramids.

Our intuition sorts the past into tidy drawers: "antiquity", "middle ages", "distant empires". But history doesn't march in single file: it overlaps, crosses and coexists. That's why these facts feel so disorienting — the facts are fine; it's the drawer we kept them in that fails.
