Memory champions can memorise the order of a whole deck of cards in under a minute. When scientists scanned their brains, they found nothing extraordinary: ordinary people using an ancient technique.
It's called the memory palace, or method of loci, and the orators of ancient Greece already used it. The idea is to turn what you want to remember into striking images and place them mentally around a spot you know well: your home. A giant banana in the hallway, a king dancing on the sofa… Then you 'walk' through those rooms, picking up the facts in order.
It works because the human brain is terrible at abstract lists but astonishing with spaces and vivid images. Use that.
Try it with the shopping list: scatter it around your imaginary house. You'll be amazed how much sticks without writing a thing.
