On 5 October 2018, at Sotheby's in London, Banksy's Girl with Balloon sold for 1.04 million pounds. The moment the hammer fell, an alarm sounded inside the frame and the canvas began sliding downwards, emerging in strips from the bottom edge. Banksy had hidden a shredder in the frame years earlier.
The destruction stopped halfway, leaving half the girl hanging in ribbons. The buyer decided to go through with the purchase, and the auction house certified the work under a new title chosen by Banksy himself: Love is in the Bin.
Three years later it went under the hammer again. Final price: 18.6 million pounds — eighteen times more.
Banksy set out to mock the art market by destroying a work live. The market replied by paying a fortune for the remains. It is hard to say who won.
