Bruno moves the crusher up by eleven days and won't give her the key

Previously: Ruth Anglada, 22, three weeks into her contract at the municipal impound, has 61 cars to strike off the list before 14 October.
Eleven days to go.
Bruno Espí, morning-shift supervisor, calls Ruth into his office on 28 September at quarter past nine and shows her a printed calendar with two red lines on it. The first is 14 October. The second is 9 October, five days earlier: the decontamination batch, which was set for the fourteenth, is going out on the ninth. The company has asked for it to be closed earlier, Bruno says, so they can bill the whole quarter before the audit.
'Eleven days to clear the warehouse,' he tells her, glasses at the tip of his nose. 'If 214 is struck off on the ninth, on the fourteenth I sign your renewal for six months.'
Ruth hands him two stapled sheets. It is an internal permit to open any vehicle in custody, with a superior's signature. She has filled in her name, the number plate 4321-BFH, the date, the reason (inspection of the temperature log under Article 12 of the impound regulations) and left the box at the top blank, where the signature goes. Bruno reads it without sitting down, head tilted toward the paper.
'No, Ruth.'
'The recorder is inside. With power it prints out everything from the day they towed it in.'
'The recorder is not in the file. 214 goes out on the ninth.'
He hands the sheets back across the desk. Ruth picks them up and puts them right back down.
'Then I need you to write that down.'
Bruno glances at the wall clock, takes off his glasses and opens his email. He starts typing in front of her, without any inner dictation, like someone signing a delivery note.
From: bespi@depositomunicipal.es To: Ruth Anglada CC: gestion@servileva.com Subject: Vehicle 214/2023
Ruth: your request to open vehicle 214/2023 this morning is denied. The file goes to scrap on 9 October at 9:00 as per the calendar for batch L-2025-11. Signed: Bruno Espí Bataller.
'There, you have it in writing,' Bruno says. 'And copied to the company.'
Ruth leaves the office at twenty to ten. Chelo Miralles, deputy at the impound for nineteen years, watches her from the desk opposite over the top of her monitor. She says nothing. She gets up for a coffee and sets a cup down next to folder 214 without looking at it.
'Three weeks,' Chelo says, not addressing anyone in particular. 'You have three weeks left, then we'll see how things look.'
'Bruno signs my renewal if I strike 214 off on the ninth.'
'Bruno signs whatever the company signs for him,' Chelo says, and goes back to her desk.
Ruth opens her email, clicks on Bruno's message and prints it three times on the corridor printer. She files two copies in folder 214, and the third she slips into an envelope with her name and the date in the top right corner. She does not seal the envelope. She leaves it inside her drawer.
At ten past eleven she goes down to the garage with Yeray Fabra, the maintenance electrician who explained to her what the grey box in the back was. She shows him the printed email.
'So it's no,' Yeray says.
'So it's yes, but copied to the company.'
'What's the difference?'
'That on the ninth, if I open 214, they don't just fire me. The company sues me too.'
Yeray keeps the paper between his fingers. He looks down at his work shoes, the ones with the reinforced toe, the ones that smell of factory rubber for the first few months.
'Eleven days,' he says.
At one o'clock, while Bruno is at lunch, Ruth logs into the system with her password and checks the new calendar. Batch L-2025-11 has its date changed, in bold: 09-10-2025, 09:00, Warehouse A, Row 14, Bay 214. She attaches the pdf of Bruno's email to the file as an annex. Save. The application returns a green tick.
Aitana Pomares, twenty, who still comes every morning to the other side of the fence with her phone camera, has not come in today. Ruth presses her face against the office glass. The new tow truck, blue, has just parked in front of the door of Warehouse A. Taped to the windscreen there is a piece of cardboard: L-2025-11 — 09/10/2025 09:00.
