The Postman

The postman stopped coming months ago, when the village office closed. Even so, every morning I find a new letter in the mailbox.

They are all written in the same shaky handwriting, and they all speak of things that haven’t happened yet.

Today’s describes, in detail, how I’ll open this envelope and stand in the doorway, rereading it, not daring to go into the house.
