Don't start on just any day

Researchers at Wharton, led by Katy Milkman, measured something we all sense: searches for 'diet', gym visits and serious resolutions spike on Mondays, on the 1st of the month, after a birthday or at the start of a term. They called it the fresh start effect.

The explanation is elegant: those dates work as mental borders. They let us file the 'old self' away in a closed chapter — the one who never saved money was last year's me — and open a clean one, free from the bookkeeping of past failures.

How to use it: don't wait for January. Build your own border. Next Monday, the first of the month, the day you're back from a trip, even rearranging your desk: any landmark works if you declare it a border. And if you break your streak, remember the calendar manufactures new beginnings every week. It isn't indulgence: it's putting the brain's machinery to work for you.
