Rebeca signs zero steps and an entire floor vanishes

MINUTES 41-B · MUNICIPAL PROPERTY · 08:12

Present are Rebeca Salvat, inventory clerk, who must close the quarter before nine, and Omar Leal, fire inspector, who needs to keep the third-floor exit open.

08:18. The system assigns zero steps between the second and third floors. Omar counts forty-six. Rebeca signs the system’s figure so she can correct it later. The step beneath Omar’s boot flattens. The other forty-five fold into the wall. The third floor disappears from the lift panel.

08:24. Rebeca opens the 1932 plan: it records forty-seven steps. She enters 47. The staircase returns and adds one final step towards a sealed mezzanine. Behind it are twelve retired civil servants; their 1998 departures are still pending because they were filed from a floor that did not exist.

08:51. Omar opens the emergency door. Rebeca approves the twelve departures, one by one. The civil servants cross the landing with their coats and folders. Omar certifies the exit as safe and files the corrected plan.

09:03. Rebeca corrects the inventory to 46. The mezzanine vanishes, now unoccupied. Omar counts forty-six steps; twelve pensioners wait for the bus.
