Review: two pizzas for 700 million dollars

★★★★☆

The 10,000 bitcoins Laszlo Hanyecz paid in 2010 for two large Papa John’s pizzas would be worth 700 million dollars today.

Style: two pizzas, one with ham and one vegetarian. Service: home delivery in Jacksonville, Florida, in under two hours. Payment: transfer on 22 May 2010, experimental currency, negotiated on a forum.

Papa John’s never knew what they’d been paid. Laszlo —a software engineer— didn’t either. He posted the transaction the next day on the bitcointalk.org forum, delighted: “I can say that I paid for some pizzas with bitcoins. Thanks, guys.”

In 2010, the 10,000 were worth 41 dollars. In 2025, 700 million. Each pizza, historic tip included, came to 350 million.

Laszlo repeated the gesture several times that spring to popularise the currency. He estimates he has “paid” more than 100,000 bitcoins in pizzas. Today that would be 7 billion.

His public statement is still open in the original thread: “I don’t regret it. Someone had to do it.”

Final note: the crust, normal. The cheese, correct. They went cold within budget.
