You put 20 euros on a Sunday and the house already did the maths

Say you have put 300 euros in this year. Not in one go: twenty at a time, on Sundays, when someone in the group chat posts an accumulator and the rest copy it. We are going to walk those 300 euros backwards, because at the end of the road there is a figure the house had written down before you put in your first one.

I take calls for a phone company in Usera, eight hours a day, and on Monday mornings there is always someone ringing about a 50-euro charge they do not recognise. It is hardly ever one of ours. That is the whole of my authority on this: I hear about it on the phone.

The end is published by the Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego, the people who keep an eye on this in Spain. In 2025, licensed online gambling operators kept 1,700.55 million euros. Watch what that figure means. It is not talking about what people wagered, which is much more: it is talking about what stayed with the house after paying out every prize of the year, down to the last one. That is 16.99 % more than in 2024.

Divide with me.

The same body counts 2,157,514 active players in 2025. That is 1,700.55 million split between 2.15 million people: 788 euros a head per year. That is my room in the shared flat in Usera, a month and a half of it.

Go down one more step. Of those 1,700 million, 893 came from online casino and 698.13 from betting. Sports betting, the kind that ends up in the football group chat, left almost 700 million with the house last year. And that same year the casino grew faster than betting did: 22 % against 15 %.

Now the part I did not know. Those same operators spent 664.40 million on marketing, and of that, 347.20 million went on promotions: the free bet that turns up when you have not logged in for weeks, the euro that appears in your account on a Friday afternoon.

That does not slip through their fingers. It is a line in their budget, signed off in a meeting. They spend 347 million giving you things because the year they did it they kept 1,700.

And the mistake is not about luck. My group is still talking about January's accumulator, and nobody has counted the eleven that fell through in February. The house has counted them. It does not need to beat you on a Sunday: it is enough that two million people are putting in 20 euros at the same time.

So this week, one thing only and a boring one. Open the app, go to your history and set the filter to the whole year, January to today, not just this week. Look at the balance. Write it down in a note on your phone with today's date next to it. In three months come back and compare the two numbers.
