Poem · From the Margen catalogue

The nurse says one name and eight heads come up

Forty-one blue plastic chairs and eight people spread out so as not to touch.

Every time the door at the back opens we raise our heads together, like at mass, and together we lower them again.

Yolanda Pardo, triage nurse, has been saying other people's surnames since three.

There are eight of us and all eight keep count of who came in after we did.

Two hours here: eleven names said, and not one of them ours.
