The Night Watch is actually a day scene

Rembrandt's most famous painting is called The Night Watch, yet there is not a single star in it: it is a daytime scene. Decades of darkening varnish and soot slowly dimmed it until, in the eighteenth century, someone described as nocturnal a militia that actually marches out in broad daylight.

The real title is a mouthful: The Company of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq. And the mistreatment did not stop there. In 1715, to squeeze it between two doors in Amsterdam's town hall, strips were cut from all four sides. Entire figures vanished from the left edge.

In 2021 the Rijksmuseum reconstructed the missing sections with artificial intelligence, working from a small copy painted at the time, and hung them around the original.

So today you can see the complete painting for the first time in three centuries. Only the name is still a lie.
