The power of a «yet»

Two people with the same talent can end up in opposite destinies because of a single belief. In «Mindset», psychologist Carol Dweck calls it the fixed mindset versus the growth mindset: believing that ability is something you have or something you train.

In her experiments with children, a single kind of praise changed behavior: those who heard «how clever you are» started avoiding challenges, because every difficulty threatened their label. Those who were praised for their effort asked for harder problems.

The fixed mindset turns every failure into a verdict; the growth mindset, into a piece of data. Dweck offers a hinge word: «yet». It isn't «I can't do it», it's «I can't do it yet». The word is small. The door it opens is not.
