Monica walked in with the folder; the boss with nothing

Last year I told Álvaro Cambra, our creative director, that if I ran eighteen campaigns for the coffee brand I wanted out of the Saturday shift. I showed him his own email saying yes. I had it printed out.

'I never said that, Monica,' he answered, without looking at the paper. 'I said we'd talk about it come September.'

'It is September.'

'Yes, it is. And this is your annual review, not the pub. We don't come in here to argue about last October's emails.'

He raised the blinds, which was not necessary, and asked the blinds to please calm down. I had the eighteen file spines on the desk, with the signing date printed on each one. He closed the folder without opening it and handed me a post-it with the October Saturday schedule.

'That's the way it is,' he said.

I took the post-it, stuck it on top of the printed email, and walked out. In the corridor, as the door was closing, I heard Álvaro:

'Nice work with the coffee, by the way.'
