Your attention is worth more than your time

Focusing without distraction is, at once, the most valuable and the most scarce skill of the 21st century. That's the thesis of Cal Newport's «Deep Work»: whoever masters it will have an enormous advantage, precisely because almost no one trains it.

Newport separates deep work (creating, solving, learning hard things) from shallow work (emails, meetings, admin). And the problem isn't just the time lost: he draws on the concept of «attention residue» from researcher Sophie Leroy — every glance at your phone leaves a trace that keeps contaminating your thinking minutes after you return to the task.

His proposal: treat concentration like a muscle. Focus blocks on the calendar, starting rituals, and getting bored on purpose from time to time, instead of filling every gap with the screen. Attention is your capital. Stop giving it away.
